Between Scales and Feathers | San Cipriano Photography Experience

Herping & Birding Photography Tour | San Cipriano, Valle del Cauca In partnership with Sony & Colombia Birdfair

Located in the heart of the biogeographical Chocó, San Cipriano is one of Colombia’s most iconic natural reserves—where crystal-clear rivers, dense rainforest, and extraordinary biodiversity converge.

Between Scales and Feathers is a three-day, two-night photography experience designed for nature photographers who want to explore both herping and birding in one of the richest ecosystems in the country.

This special expedition takes place within the framework of Colombia Birdfair, with the institutional support of the event and in collaboration with Sony, creating a unique environment focused on learning, field practice, and meaningful connection with nature. Throughout the experience, participants will develop their photographic skills while exploring tropical forest trails by day and night, guided by a professional team specialized in wildlife photography.

During the tour, we will focus on in situ photography of amphibians and reptiles, as well as bird photography in strategic locations around San Cipriano. The experience is designed to balance technical learning, creative exploration, and respect for wildlife, allowing participants to work at a natural pace while refining composition, light management, and field techniques.

More than a tour, this is a curated photographic experience that brings together conservation, education, and storytelling—supported by Sony and Colombia Birdfair, and crafted by Keeping Nature Tours to offer an immersive, safe, and inspiring journey into one of Colombia’s most biodiverse landscapes.

  • Macro Lens (90 mm – 105 mm). A high-quality macro lens is essential for capturing the intricate details of small subjects, such as the vibrant patterns of poison dart frogs. It allows you to get close enough to fill the frame while maintaining sharpness and clarity.
  • Wide-Angle Macro Lens (15 mm). A 15 mm wide-angle macro lens is perfect for creating environmental portraits that feature both the subject and its natural habitat. This lens helps highlight the unique surroundings, adding depth and context to your shots.
  • External Flash. Portable off-camera flashes are ideal for delivering controlled lighting in the low-light conditions of tropical forests. They enhance the vivid colors of amphibians without disturbing their natural behavior, making each shot more impactful.
  • Wireless Flash Triggers. Wireless transmitters allow you to use off-camera flash setups, offering greater creative control over light direction and intensity. This is particularly useful in uneven lighting conditions and dense jungle environments.
  • Flash Diffuser. Essential for softening harsh light and minimizing reflections on the moist skin of amphibians. Diffusers ensure even, natural-looking lighting that highlights fine textures without overpowering the subject.
  • Portable Reflector. Compact and foldable, reflectors help bounce light onto the subject, providing additional fill light in shaded or low-light conditions. They enhance detail and color without the need for extra flash units.
  • Telephoto Lens (400mm – 600mm) – A must for wildlife photography, especially for photographing birds and other distant
subjects. The telephoto lens allows you to capture intimate details from a respectful distance, perfect for bird-in-flight shots and minimizing disruption to wildlife.
  • Teleconverter – For those looking to extend the reach of their telephoto lenses, a high-quality teleconverter can be invaluable. It provides additional zoom, letting you get closer to distant subjects like birds without compromising sharpness, adding flexibility and enhancing your creative possibilities.

Day 1 | February 16 | Cali (Valle del Cauca) | Birding & Herping Experience Begins

We will depart early in the morning from the city of Cali towards the San Cipriano Natural Reserve. Upon arrival in the village of Zaragoza, we will board the traditional “Brujitas”, the iconic local transportation that runs along the old railway tracks, taking us into the heart of the reserve. Once in San Cipriano, we will check in at the lodge and get settled in our rooms. After a short break, we will begin our morning birding session, exploring forest trails and river edges in search of endemic and colorful species typical of the biogeographical Chocó.

We will return to the lodge for lunch, followed by a brief rest. In the afternoon, we will head out again for a second birding session, taking advantage of changing light conditions and increased activity. After dinner, we will begin our first night herping walk, searching for amphibians and reptiles along forest trails and streams, with opportunities for in situ observation and photography. We will return to the lodge to rest and prepare for the next day.

Day 2 | February 17 | San Cipriano | Full Day Birding & Night Herping

The day will begin early with breakfast, followed by a morning birding session, focusing on different habitats within the reserve and maximizing species diversity. After returning to the lodge for lunch and a short rest, we will continue with afternoon birding, exploring additional trails and observation points.

Following dinner, we will head out once again for a night herping expedition, where nocturnal species become active and new photographic and observational opportunities arise. This second night walk allows us to deepen our understanding of the reserve’s herpetofauna under different conditions. We will return to the lodge for rest.

Day 3 | February 18 | San Cipriano | Final Birding & Farewell

On our final day, we will enjoy breakfast before heading out for a last morning birding session, taking advantage of early activity and final photographic opportunities. After returning to the lodge, we will have lunch and prepare for departure. In the afternoon, we will travel back via Brujitas to Zaragoza and continue by road to Cali, where the tour will officially conclude.

We will say goodbye after three days immersed in one of Colombia’s best-preserved natural reserves, closing a unique birding and herping experience in the Chocó biogeographical region.

We have some recommendations that will be very useful when choosing your equipment depending on the approach you want to explore. We want to travel comfortably and protect our equipment. We’ll give you some tips on what to keep in mind.

  • Follow instructions: Above all others, the most important rule to live by while exploring is to observe and follow all oral instructions given by the tour leader, or lodge or station staff.
  • Protect yourself from the sun at all times: During the explorations we will be exposed to high, low temperatures or humid tropical climates, it is recommended to bring all the elements that protect from the sun such as hats or caps, collars, sunscreen and long sleeve shirts.
  • Basics: You should know and handle the basics of manual photography (aperture, speeds, ISO, focal range). If you do not know these concepts, we recommend you take our basic photography course where you will receive an Introduction to Photography before the photographic tour.
  • Protect your equipment from humidity: Reduce the impact of temperature changes, try to keep the battery out of the camera, this can reduce electronic damage and prolong your charge. Carry dry bags that allow you to keep your equipment isolated from the weather conditions. It is always advisable to carry silica gel, these absorb moisture. After working days you can put your equipment in the dry bag and add plenty of silica gel to absorb the moisture retained by your camera.
  • Take care of your belongings: All our favorite destinations are safe to travel to. You should always be vigilant and take care of your valuable items whenever you find yourself in crowded bus stations, busy city streets and bustling markets.
