Landscape Photography Tour | Cabo de la Vela - La Guajira

Embark on a transformative journey through the wild beauty of La Guajira, where the desert meets the Caribbean Sea and the night sky becomes your canvas. With Keeping Nature Tours and guided by the experienced photographers Jhonattan Vanegas and Juan David Laverde, you’ll explore the mystical lands of Cabo de la Vela and Punta Gallinas — iconic locations that offer powerful contrasts and timeless compositions.

La Guajira is one of the most magical places in Colombia for astrophotography. Its clear, unpolluted skies blend with the earthy tones of the dunes and the turquoise waters of the Caribbean to create a surreal environment. When night falls, the moon and stars bathe the landscape in deep blues and silver reflections, offering an almost otherworldly experience. Here, you’ll learn to use long exposures, natural light, flash, and creative composition to translate this magic into your own photographic language.

During the day, you’ll capture vast, minimalistic landscapes where the light shifts between silence and intensity. At night, you’ll work with stars reflected in the sea, crafting images that are both conceptual and emotional. This isn’t just a workshop. It’s a space for personal exploration, for learning to feel your way through photography, and for reconnecting with nature in one of the most striking and culturally rich regions of Colombia.

Are you ready to go beyond the technical and photograph with purpose?

Join us in La Guajira — the desert awaits your vision.

  • This tour invites you to explore one of Colombia’s most enigmatic and visually striking landscapes: La Guajira, where desert meets ocean and the night sky comes alive.

  • We’ll photograph Cabo de la Vela and Punta Gallinas, capturing scenes that feel otherworldly. You’ll learn new techniques in landscape composition and astrophotography, guided by professionals who will help you express not just what you see — but what you feel.

  • Under clear skies and far from light pollution, you’ll experience the magic of photographing stars, sand, and sea in a single frame. Discover the secrets of long exposure in a setting that naturally inspires awe.

  • Beyond photography, you’ll immerse yourself in Wayuu culture, connecting with local traditions and ancestral knowledge. And perhaps most importantly, you’ll disconnect from the noise to reconnect with what matters most: the wind, the land, the silence, the light.

  • Personalized Field Support – Throughout the journey, you’ll receive hands-on guidance from experienced nature photographers who will help you refine your settings, framing, and composition in real time — so you can fully capture the mood and magic of each landscape.
  • Night and Long Exposure Photography – Explore the beauty of La Guajira after dark through guided night sessions focused on long exposure and creative light use. You’ll learn how to work with the stars, the desert’s natural textures, and minimalist compositions to create powerful and atmospheric images.
  • Daylight Landscape Photography – From golden desert dunes to vast coastal scenes, you’ll have support in approaching landscape photography with purpose and clarity, learning to read light, lines, and mood as part of your visual storytelling.
  • Group Sessions in the Field – As we move through different locations, you’ll have the chance to ask questions, receive quick feedback, and share learning moments in a supportive group dynamic that turns every outing into an open learning space.
  • Real Moments, Real Growth – This is not a technical workshop — it’s a photography experience rooted in connection. With expert assistance available when you need it, every shot becomes an opportunity to grow, feel, and create something that truly reflects what moved you.
  • Bridge Compact Cameras: A versatile option for those who don’t want to go heavy with heavy equipment, this camera lets you apply all the knowledge you’ll learn in this photography workshop.
  • 16mm – 24mm Wide Angle Lens: With a wide-angle lens, you can capture more elements in a single scene by having a wider angle of view, making better use of landscape composition.
  • 24mm – 70mm Varifocal Lenses: The kit lenses for this adventure are perfect. If you have a camera that lets you play with the focus distance, this is the opportunity to highlight their full potential while observing the stars in the middle of the night.
  • Drone for photography and video: Take advantage of the landscapes that combine the sea and the sand to capture beautiful video and photographic shots on your expedition through La Guajira.
  • Riohacha – Our journey begins in the vibrant capital of La Guajira, where the Caribbean breeze meets indigenous culture. Riohacha is our starting point for the workshop and the gateway to a transformative photographic expedition through some of Colombia’s most breathtaking and remote landscapes.
  • Uribia – Known as the “Indigenous Capital of Colombia,” Uribia is more than just a stop along the way — it’s a cultural encounter. Here we’ll pause to share a local meal and connect with the ancestral heartbeat of La Guajira before venturing deeper into the desert.
  • Manaure Salt Flats – Our route takes us through Manaure, home to Colombia’s largest salt flats. These bright, geometric landscapes provide a unique setting for minimalist photography — an interplay of texture, reflection, and contrast under the Caribbean sun.
  • Rainbow Beach & Ojo de Agua Beach – Along the coast, we’ll visit hidden gems like Rainbow Beach, known for its iridescent hues and raw beauty, and Ojo de Agua, where turquoise waters meet desert cliffs. These coastal landscapes offer powerful contrasts for composition and mood.
  • Pilón de Azúcar & Lighthouse Viewpoint – A spiritual site for the Wayuu and a natural viewpoint over the sea, Pilón de Azúcar is a key stop for sunrise or sunset sessions. Nearby, the panoramic views from the Cabo de la Vela lighthouse allow us to frame vast horizons where land, sea, and sky converge.
  • Punta Gallinas – The northernmost point of South America and one of the most surreal places to photograph. Endless dunes, untouched beaches, and star-filled skies offer the perfect canvas for landscape, long-exposure, and astrophotography. Here, we’ll begin our theoretical sessions and dive into hands-on practice under La Guajira’s magical night sky.
  • Taroa Dunes – Sweeping dunes that plunge into the Caribbean Sea — the Taroa Dunes offer some of the most dramatic and unique landscapes in Colombia. This location is a highlight for sunset photography, minimal compositions, and the experience of photographing silence itself.
  • Cabo de la Vela – A sacred place for the Wayuu people and a dream location for photographers. Cabo de la Vela combines coastal cliffs, beaches, golden light, and traditional life, providing a powerful blend of natural beauty and cultural storytelling. It’s where we’ll continue our creative practice, both during the day and under the stars.
  • La Guajira’s Night Skies – Throughout the tour, we’ll photograph some of Colombia’s clearest and darkest skies — ideal for capturing the Milky Way, star trails, and long exposures that blend desert, sea, and starlight in one frame.

Our journey heads north toward Punta Gallinas, stopping for lunch in Uribia, the cultural capital of Colombia’s indigenous Wayuu territory. Upon arrival, we’ll settle into our desert accommodations and enjoy some rest before the night. Day 2 | Punta Gallinas | Theoretical and practical photography talk

After a traditional breakfast, we’ll begin our day with a photography warm-up and hands-on guidance focused on landscape composition and light. In the afternoon, we’ll head out to explore the Taroa Dunes and surrounding areas, capturing the interplay between sand, sea, and golden hour light. After dark, we’ll return to the field for another opportunity to capture long exposure images under La Guajira’s legendary night sky.

Day 4 | Cabo de la Vela | Landscape Photography and Astrophotography

We’ll start the morning with a relaxing walk and some time to enjoy the coastal breeze. In the afternoon, we’ll explore new shooting locations around Cabo, where the meeting of sea and desert offers endless creative possibilities. After dinner, we’ll head out for our final night session, where we’ll revisit techniques and experiment with new compositions in a calm, supportive setting designed to help you translate what you feel into powerful imagery.

We have some recommendations that will be very useful when choosing your equipment depending on the approach you want to explore. We want to travel comfortably and protect our equipment. We’ll give you some tips on what to keep in mind.

  • Follow instructions: Above all others, the most important rule to live by while exploring is to observe and follow all oral instructions given by the tour leader, or lodge or station staff.
  • Protect yourself from the sun at all times: During the explorations we will be exposed to high, low temperatures or humid tropical climates, it is recommended to bring all the elements that protect from the sun such as hats or caps, collars, sunscreen and long sleeve shirts.
  • Basics: You should know and handle the basics of manual photography (aperture, speeds, ISO, focal range). If you do not know these concepts, we recommend you take our basic photography course where you will receive an Introduction to Photography before the photographic tour.
  • Protect your equipment from humidity: Reduce the impact of temperature changes, try to keep the battery out of the camera, this can reduce electronic damage and prolong your charge. Carry dry bags that allow you to keep your equipment isolated from the weather conditions. It is always advisable to carry silica gel, these absorb moisture. After working days you can put your equipment in the dry bag and add plenty of silica gel to absorb the moisture retained by your camera.
  • Take care of your belongings: All our favorite destinations are safe to travel to. You should always be vigilant and take care of your valuable items whenever you find yourself in crowded bus stations, busy city streets and bustling markets.
