One of the best amphibian, reptile and wildlife photographers in Colombia. He leads workshops and photographic tours. He is a biologist and expert in macro-photography, full-time nature photographer and leading tour guide in Colombia.He has published 14 scientific articles contributing to the knowledge and conservation of various species in Colombia. His photographic work has taken him to explore every corner of the country. His photos have been featured in magazines such as Enfoque Visual, RowZine, and the Catalog of Amphibians and Reptiles of Colombia, among others. He won the environmental advocacy category in the Agenda del Mar photography competition (2022). He uses photography and biology as tools to promote conservation through various initiatives, contributing to a deeper understanding of species’ behaviors and their interactions with ecosystems. These two passions have allowed him to offer a unique perspective on the hidden and unknown world beneath the mysterious landscapes of Colombia’s mountains and plains, aiming to create a bridge between memory and nature.

Day 1 | Welcome to Colombia | La Florida Birding

Your adventure begins in Cali, Valle del Cauca, where we set off towards Km 18 to explore the enchanting La Florida Birding site. Nestled in the cloud forests of San Antonio, La Florida is renowned for its rich avian diversity, boasting over 340 bird species, including the endemic Chestnut Wood-Quail (Odontophorus hyperythrus) and the vibrant Multicolored Tanager (Chlorochrysa nitidissima) . The site’s well-placed feeders and natural surroundings offer excellent opportunities for close-up shots of various hummingbirds and tanagers. After a day filled with bird sightings and photography, we journey to our accommodation to settle in and enjoy a well-deserved rest.

 

Day 2 | Valle del Cauca | Doña Dora Birding

We embark on an early excursion to Doña Dora Birding, located in the Chocó bioregion—one of the most biodiverse areas on Earth, hosting over 50 endemic bird species . Our hike leads us to observe the magnificent Toucan Barbet(Semnornis ramphastinus) in its natural habitat. This Chocó endemic species is typically a canopy dweller but can be observed up close at Doña Dora’s feeders . The rest of the day is dedicated to capturing the vibrant bird species of the area through photography. In the evening, we travel to Buga to check in and relax over dinner.

 

Day 3 | Valle del Cauca | Laguna de Sonso

Our day begins with a visit to Laguna de Sonso, the last extensive remnant of original natural wetland in the Cauca River Valley . This 2,045-hectare reserve is a haven for over 200 bird species, including the Snail Kite (Rostrhamus sociabilis), Black-bellied Whistling-Duck (Dendrocygna autumnalis), and Cocoi Heron (Ardea cocoi) . We spend the day exploring the wetlands, focusing on birdwatching and photography. After a midday break and lunch, we continue with an afternoon photography session, capturing birds, macro details, or landscapes with natural light. In the evening, a night walk offers opportunities to photograph more frogs, lizards, and snakes, concluding our day’s adventure.

Day 4 | Tolima | El Retorno de los Colibríes

We depart for Anaime, Tolima, to visit El Retorno de los Colibríes, a private nature reserve known for its unique viewing opportunities of Central Andes species that are endemic to the area or extremely difficult to see elsewhere . Among the rare species found here are the Yellow-eared Parrot (Ognorhynchus icterotis), Indigo-capped Hummingbird (Amazilia cyanifrons), and Lazuline Sabrewing (Campylopterus falcatus). We spend the day engaging in birdwatching and photography, focusing on these unique species. Later, we travel to Armenia for dinner and rest.

 

Day 5 | Quindío | El Campanario

Our journey continues to El Campanario, renowned for high-altitude birding, with elevations ranging from 3,200 to 3,600 meters . This area hosts 127 bird species, including 16 species of hummingbirds, with the crown jewel being the Rainbow-bearded Thornbill (Chalcostigma herrani). We dedicate the morning to photography activities, focusing on the region’s incredible biodiversity. After lunch, we set off for Mistrató, arriving to check into our lodging and enjoy a relaxing evening.

 

Day 6 | Risaralda | Bird’s Home Mistrató

We conclude our tour with a visit to Bird’s Home Mistrató, a site known for its rich avian diversity, including the Cauca Guan (Penelope perspicax) and various hummingbirds and tanagers . The morning is dedicated to birdwatching and photography activities, providing ample opportunities to capture stunning images. After lunch, we head to Pereira, arriving for dinner and a well-deserved rest.

  • All Meals: Three daily meals featuring local and international cuisine, catering to dietary preferences and ensuring energy for daily activities.

  • Snacks and Refreshments: Light snacks and beverages available throughout the day to keep you refreshed during excursions.

  • Expert Photography Guidance: Personalized instruction and tips from experienced bird photographers to enhance your skills and capture stunning images.

  • Local Birding Guides: Knowledgeable local guides at each site to assist with bird identification and share insights into the regional avifauna.

  • Entrance Fees: All fees for reserves, parks, and private properties visited during the tour are covered.

We will begin an immersive photographic adventure in nature where you will discover and tell your version of your story through your photographs. We have some recommendations that will be very useful when choosing your equipment depending on the approach you want to explore. We want to travel comfortably and protect our equipment. We’ll give you some tips on what to keep in mind.

  • Follow instructions: Above all others, the most important rule to live by while exploring is to observe and follow all oral instructions given by the tour leader, or lodge or station staff.
  • Protect yourself from the sun at all times: During the explorations we will be exposed to high, low temperatures or humid tropical climates, it is recommended to bring all the elements that protect from the sun such as hats or caps, collars, sunscreen and long sleeve shirts.
  • Basics: You should know and handle the basics of manual photography (aperture, speeds, ISO, focal range). If you do not know these concepts, we recommend you take our basic photography course where you will receive an Introduction to Photography before the photographic tour.
  • Protect your equipment from humidity: Reduce the impact of temperature changes, try to keep the battery out of the camera, this can reduce electronic damage and prolong your charge. Carry dry bags that allow you to keep your equipment isolated from the weather conditions. It is always advisable to carry silica gel, these absorb moisture. After working days you can put your equipment in the dry bag and add plenty of silica gel to absorb the moisture retained by your camera.
  • Take care of your belongings: All our favorite destinations are safe to travel to. You should always be vigilant and take care of your valuable items whenever you find yourself in crowded bus stations, busy city streets and bustling markets.
